This preset is useful to get a written, referenceable record of team members’ views on how a project went. By using a slackbot, you can perform retrospectives routinely on schedule. The preset questions are designed to understand what went well and what can be improved.

This promotes a learning culture by encouraging everyone to track mistakes and reflect on them. You can filter mistake logs by date within Geekbot’s dashboard and discover common patterns over specific periods of time. Are most mistakes logistical? Are they out of someone’s control? Use a slackbot to turn knowledge sharing into a daily, consistent routine. Reference a saved written history and filter by specific dates via Geekbot’s dashboard. Exposing team members to novel ideas (on a consistent daily basis) can lead to new innovations and discoveries. With more knowledge, your team can achieve current goals more effectively — or even create new goals they hadn’t thought of before.
Any change in product development could have an impact. Use this preset to stay organized and keep track of changes consistently using a slackbot. You can view a record of notable product changes over time using Geekbot’s dashboard, which allows you to filter by specific dates.
Default Questions for the “Daily Standup” Preset:
The daily standup preset uses a 4 question format that can be easily modified:
- How do you feel today?
- What did you do yesterday?
- What will you do today?
- Anything blocking your progress?
You can change the default questions above if you’d like. For example, one of our customers told us they saw success by configuring Geekbot to only ask 1 question: “What would you like the team to know today?”
You can also add this question: “How do you feel?” This allows you to get insights on team happiness (i.e. understand if they’re overloaded with tasks or something is blocking them).
The “Daily Standup” Settings are Completely Customizable:

You have control over the following:
“Time” and “Timezone”:
You can choose the standup time and timezone. For example, you can set the time to 9:00 AM and if your team is remote/distributed, then you can select “User’s local timezone”. This will tell the bot to contact people at 9:00 AM on their own respective timezone. This is one of the unique benefits of doing standups via slackbot for remote teams: instead of asking people from all timezones to attend at all hours, everyone can answer the questions at a reasonable time, when it doesn’t break their workflow.
“Period & Days”
You have the option of scheduling the standup weekly, over a 2/3/4 week period, and in the first or last week of each month. Alternatively, you can set it to a one time only standup (not repeated).
You have the choice of either letting the bot contact people exactly on the scheduled time, or waiting until they appear online before sending them a DM. Again, this is designed to not interrupt people at inconvenient times or when they are out of office.
This feature gives teams an overview of who participated in the daily report, who missed it, and who was out of office. You can see the percentage of engagement. If a team member isn’t engaged (i.e. misses 4 standups in a row) then teams can use this info and react accordingly. Standup meeting attendance could be a gauge for employee performance.
You can select the channel where the standup responses will be posted. Many of our users create a new channel within their Slack workspace called “Status”. However, you can also use existing channels.
Your team members are automatically imported through Slack, so you can simply select them from a list or type in their name to look for them.
What Happens Once You Create a Standup?
Once you create a standup, all the participants get a notification from Geekbot in their Slack workspace at the date & time you specified. After the standup begins, participants can answer whenever they’re ready. By default, there are no time limits, unlike Standuply and Polly.
Not having a time limit enables team members to complete the standup at a convenient time that doesn’t disrupt their workflow. For example, if you’re in the zone and coding at 2:00 PM, you don’t have to stop working because a standup expires in 5 minutes.
What Happens After Standup Participants Complete Their Answers?
In addition to the benefits of not interrupting workflow and being conducive to remote teams mentioned above, running standups via a slackbot also has a great benefit of having a written history of responses.
Many customers go back and look at the history of their standups for specific projects via Geekbot’s dashboard or Slack. They determine all the mistakes that occured (i.e. too much research, inefficient communication, etc.). These insights allow them to perform better on future projects and not repeat the same mistakes. It also allows teams to run better meetings (i.e. retrospectives).
In Geekbot, you can view your team’s standup answer history in a few different ways:
- The answers to the “Daily Standup” report will be published on a Slack channel of your choosing.
Many of our customers create a new/separate channel for this.
- Inside Geekbot’s dashboard, you have the option of downloading the answers via a CSV file.
- The answers will also be saved on the Geekbot web dashboard so you can go back and filter by specific dates & times.
Some of Geekbot’s loyal customers really value the history log since this removes the need to pay for Slack to access previous answers.
- You have the option to get a standup summary from Geekbot via email & select the frequency of emails.
For example: if you choose to get a standup summary every Thursday via email, then Geekbot sends a summary of your team’s standup answers for a specific time range (i.e. January 30 to February 6).
- You can access Webhooks or our API via the dashboard to send the answers and data to other products/channels like Trello, Asana, and more.
- Anyone can set up email summaries and the standup answers are always visible to all team members — not just the manager (more on our philosophy for transparency later in the article).

Polly offers a Slack standup bot that does the job, but doesn’t offer as much robust functionality as Geekbot and Standuply.

If your main use case is first and foremost a Slack standup bot for automating and improving standup meetings, then we think a solution focused on that use case (like ours) makes more sense.
