You can only do so many icebreakers&nbsp;or hold your daily standup outside so many times before that too feels mundane. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The reality is that when someone points out that \u201cdaily huddles&nbsp;are boring,\u201d what they\u2019re really saying is that the daily huddle&nbsp;isn\u2019t relevant or productive to their day.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/geekbot.com\/blog\/standup-meetings-waste-of-time\/\" target=\"_blank\">A bad daily huddle&nbsp;feels like a waste of time<\/a>. It takes too long, doesn\u2019t provide helpful information, and disrupts your workflow. But that didn\u2019t work out too well, and the issues we experienced will probably sound familiar to you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> <strong>Half our team would sit through updates that weren\u2019t relevant to their day<\/strong>. As one or two developers discussed pertinent issues to <em>their<\/em>&nbsp;day, the rest of the team had to listen patiently even though what was being discussed wasn\u2019t relevant to them.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> <strong>The scheduled daily huddle&nbsp;time would interrupt our workflow. <\/strong>Synchronous daily huddles&nbsp;are nearly always a workflow disruption. At its worst, members of our development team were being called away to participate in a daily huddle&nbsp;right when they were getting in a zone and solving a complex issue.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> <strong>The daily huddle&nbsp;would drag on for too long<\/strong>. The <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scrum.org\/resources\/scrum-guide\" target=\"_blank\">Scrum Guide<\/a>&nbsp;is clear \u2014 the daily huddle&nbsp;should take a max of 15 minutes. But synchronous standups lend themselves to bloated timeframes, due to chit chat and team members solving their blockers in real time. If your daily standup is constantly going over 15 minutes (as it was for us) then it\u2019s a sign that something is amiss in how you\u2019re structuring or running your huddles.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> <strong>It was difficult to schedule<\/strong>. As we discussed earlier, while these are short term fixes that don\u2019t address the <a href=\"https:\/\/geekbot.com\/blog\/daily-standup-meeting-for-remote-teams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"root issues (opens in a new tab)\">root issues<\/a>&nbsp;which frustrate developers (i.e. meetings lasting too long, getting disrupted, etc.), they can inject life into the huddle and help it feel less mundane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Change Your Location<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By always holding the daily huddle&nbsp;in the same place or conference room, you create a habit and set expectations. Everyone probably has their preferred seat and it can start to feel monotonous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, we recommend changing the daily huddle\u2019s location (i.e. outside or in the office kitchen). This is an easy way to keep team members&nbsp;more engaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re a team of remote workers, you can do a version of this by asking everyone to get on Zoom&nbsp;from a new place in their home. So, for example, if somebody usually attends meetings from their office, they can switch to the living room (and the change in scenery can help things feel less mundane). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Use Icebreakers&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the daily huddle&nbsp;starts, spend a few moments breaking the ice. This means telling a joke, sharing a riddle, or starting with an interesting quote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, you can do a desert island questionnaire, such as asking your team, \u201cWhat five books would you take to a desert island?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This helps everyone on your team get to know each other better, and creates a more positive atmosphere. When team members&nbsp;are in a better mood <em>from the start<\/em>, they are then more likely to be engaged during the daily huddle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A note for asynchronous daily huddles<\/strong>: You can customize your questions with Geekbot and include icebreakers. Answer Your Daily Huddle&nbsp;Questions Creatively<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the example below is about a <a href=\"https:\/\/geekbot.com\/blog\/how-to-run-a-sprint-retrospective\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">retrospective meeting<\/a>, it can also apply to daily huddles&nbsp;(especially if you add an icebreaker&nbsp;question per the above). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We recently conducted an interview with Heather Sills about <a href=\"https:\/\/geekbot.com\/blog\/how-to-be-a-good-scrum-master\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how to be a more effective Scrum Master<\/a>. In one of the more unique retrospectives she participated in, developers were asked to draw an image that illustrated how they felt about their previous sprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some developers might instinctually scoff at such an idea, thinking it wastes time. But the truth is this sort of creative change to the huddle has significant benefits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People can get stuck giving quick, automated answers, such as \u201cThe sprint went great.\u201d But by changing how they answer the question, you\u2019re encouraging your team to spend more time thinking about the question. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Note: <\/strong>If you run asynchronous, in-Slack retrospectives or standups through Geekbot, you can use technology to your advantage. Have your team upload a meme or GIF of how they felt their previous sprint went. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Change How Often You Have the Daily Huddle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite it being the commonly accepted practice,&nbsp;your huddle doesn\u2019t have to happen every day \u2014 in fact, doing so may cause developers to become disengaged. So it\u2019s important to find the perfect cadence for your team and the sprints you\u2019re running (i.e. holding the standup twice a week) rather than on the commonly accepted daily basis, which&nbsp;may not be as effective in your specific situation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/geekbot.com\/blog\/asynchronous-standup-slack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">as we\u2019ve written in a recent case study<\/a>, GitHub\u2019s Services Programs Team found it best to hold their daily huddles&nbsp;twice a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It works like this: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, the team gets sent their modified daily huddle&nbsp;questions on Monday. They need to answer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What are you going to work on this week?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you need any help?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then at the end of the week on Friday, they are asked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What did you do this week?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What would you like to do next week?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Geekbot works perfectly for companies like GitHub because you can customize every aspect of the <\/strong><strong>daily huddle<\/strong><strong>, from when it\u2019s held and what questions you ask.
