The deadline is still tomorrow.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You go and tell your family you won\u2019t be able to check out this new movie with them. Disgruntled and stressed out, you turn off the Slack. You\u2019re working into the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Slack Productive?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the scenario above seems a bit unrealistic to you, consider the data below.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Employees on average receive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/recode\/2019\/5\/1\/18511575\/productivity-slack-google-microsoft-facebook\">45 Slack messages<\/a> during an 8-hour work day. That\u2019s 45 potential interruptions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Microsoft study, we need about <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/you-lose-up-to-25-minutes-every-time-you-respond-to-an-email-2014-12\">25 minutes to get back to the task<\/a><\/strong> we were working on <strong>after every interruption<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you multiply 45 messages by 25 minutes, you get an utterly unproductive workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How is this possible? After all, Slack positions themselves as a team productivity tool. \u201cWhere work happens,\u201d right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Partially, it\u2019s true. According to the official Slack website, 32% of <a href=\"https:\/\/slackhq.com\/slack-is-turning-two\">teams reported productivity increase<\/a> after using the messenger. [<em>Makes you wonder: what did the other 68% report<\/em>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But if you think something is off, you\u2019re right.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On June 27, 2018, <strong>when Slack was down for a few hours<\/strong>, a 3rd party time-tracking software <strong>registered a <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rescuetime.com\/slack-productivity-outage\/\"><strong>5% surge in productivity<\/strong><\/a> for its 12,000+ customers that were using Slack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Acilia Liu, a software programmer at Notion sums it up: \u201cBy lowering the barrier to initiate communication, the hidden side effect is that Slack has the quiet capacity to exponentially increase communication overhead. Resulting in much more voluminous, lower quality communication.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>On average, workers check out their messengers every 6 minutes <\/strong><\/p><cite>blog.rescuetime.com<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We don\u2019t say Slack is terrible. It\u2019s actually the reverse. Slack users <a href=\"https:\/\/fitsmallbusiness.com\/slack-statistics-for-small-businesses\/\">report<\/a> a 25.1% reduction in meetings after using the service. With the right approach and integrations Slack provides amazing benefits for your team culture, transparency, and collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But left unchecked its effect on team productivity can be disastrous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, what can you do to reap all the benefits of Slack and yet allow people to focus and do their best work?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, the first solution is to turn Slack off. But if you do that every time you need to work, you might as well delete it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We developed a better solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Solution <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five years ago I was obsessed with a problem: my team was using Slack daily, but no one actually knew what everyone was working on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Daily standup meetings didn\u2019t help, they only distracted us and added to the chaos. We needed to find a way to share both our work progress and roadblocks without distracting each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In August 2015 I sat down and wrote a prototype for Slack bot that would help us hold asynchronous meetings directly in Slack.
